1981 - Today we remember everyone’s favourite stoner and reggae artist. Nesta Robert Marley, better known as Bob Marley, died on this day in the year 1981. He was of course best known for his music like ‘One Love’ or ‘Is This Love’. He was also known for his cannabis use, as he believed it to be a healing herb and supported legalisation.
Marley and cannabis
Marley was a big advocate for cannabis use. According to him it was used a lot in the Bible verses, like in Psalms 104:14. He began using it when he converted from Rastafari to Christianity. Bob was arrested for cannabis use in 1968, after which he spent a month in prison for this. In prison Marley made some friends, who encouraged him to write more music with a political message.
Bob’s unneeded death
After a football injury doctors found a skin tumour on Marley’s big toe. The doctors recommended an amputation, but Bob refused because of religious reasons. Later the tumour spread and eventually killed him.
360 trivial fact
Bob actually had a pretty dark past. He used to be possessed by the devil, at least if the local rastaman was to be believed. As a kid Marley used to read palms, which was condemned by Rasta. His father took him to the local rastaman, who ‘drove the devil right out of him’. After that he never read palms ever again, even though people asked him plenty of times.
