1934 -

She starred on the big screen next to the greatest actors in history. Today is Sophia Loren’s birthday. She was born in Rome, Italy, as Sofia Villani Scicolone on September 20, 1934.

Wounded in the war
Sofia was the daughter of Romilda Villani, a piano teacher, and Riccardo Scicolone, a construction engineer. Riccardo refused to marry Romilda and eventually left her. Romilda took the girls to her own mother in Pozzuoli, near Naples and the family lived there throughout WWII. Sofia physically experienced the war. The harbour and munition plant in Pozzuoli was frequently bombed by Allies. Sofia got wounded in the chin, when struck by a piece of shrapnel.

International movie star
Aged 14, Sofia entered a beauty contest. She did not win, but was selected as a finalist so she was noticed. At 15 she enrolled in acting class and her first role was a part in Mervyn LeRoy’s film Quo Vadis, in 1951. One year later she began using her new stage name Sophia Loren and after 6 years she became an international movie star, by signing a contract with Paramount Pictures. A long list of movies with famous co-actors followed. For example she acted with Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable and Marlon Brando.

360 trivial fact
After some stormy relationships, Loren married Carlo Ponti. They stayed together until his death. Asked in an interview if she would ever marry again, Loren said ‘No, never again. It would be impossible to love anyone else.’
