1963 -

Today Edith Piaf’s dying day. The French singer was born December 19, 1915 as Édith Giovanna Gasson and died October 10, 1963 as Edith Piaf. Life often had been cruel to her. Edith’s tragic life was easily recognized in her songs and in her voice. She became world famous with her songs ‘La vie en rose’ (Life in rosy hues) and ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’ (No, I don’t feel sorry about anything).

Street artist
Edith’s mother was a bar singer, her father an acrobat, but she was raised by her grandmother who ran a brothel in Normandy. She started singing when she was 15 years old and at 17 she gave birth to her daughter Marcelle. Edith was not able to take care of the baby and Marcelle’s father took the child from her. The little girl died of meningitis at age 2.

The little sparrow
At age 20 Edith was discovered by club owner Louis Leplée. He named her ‘La môme Piaf’ (the little sparrow) because she was very nervous every time she had to perform. Later Leplée was murdered. Edith was suspected an accomplice, but was acquitted. During WWII Piaf wrote 'La vie en rose’ and became loved by the Germans as well as by the French.

360 trivial fact
Due to alcohol abuse and a poor health Edith Piaf lost weight. She lost a significant amount of weight, reaching a low of 30 kg (66 pounds) by 1962.
