1982 -

‘Here, human achievements are celebrated through imagination, the wonders of enterprise, and concepts of a future that promises new and exciting benefits for all.’ These were the words spoken by E. Cardon Walker, board member of the Disney Company, opening Disney’s theme park Epcot Center in Florida, October 1, 1982. It was the second of four theme parks built at Walt Disney World, after the Magic Kingdom.

Wonderful science
Epcot is divided into two areas with different themes: Future World and World Showcase. Future World is an area that shows possibilities of technology and science. The World Showcase shows the wonderful examples of technology we already have in our world, in different countries and different societies. Of course it’s all merged with Disney’s signature. There are dark rides and experiences and Disney figures are to be found on every corner. But technology and innovation is the most important theme of Epcot. As Walker said it: ‘May it instill a new sense of belief and pride in man's ability to shape a world that offers hope to people everywhere’

360 trivial fact
Walt Disney planned Epcot himself before he died. However in his mind it was not an amusement park but a utopic city of the future. His own words: ‘EPCOT will always be a showcase to the world of the ingenuity and imagination of American free enterprise’. After Walt died, the company decided that they could not run a city without Walt’s guidance.
