1951 -

Today is the birthday of pop singer Sting, born in 1951. His was born in England as Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, being the oldest son of a hairdresser (his mom) and a milkman and engineer (his dad). His first musical encounter was when he got a Spanish guitar when he was ten years old. The young Gordon got obsessed with it. After becoming a qualified teacher, he kept on performing Jazz in the evening and during weekends.

Who is this Gordon character?
It’s during this period Gordon got his nickname. He performed with the band Phoenix Jazzmen, when bandleader Gordon Solomon told him he looked like a wasp. He had the habit of wearing a black and yellow sweater. After that day he felt his name was Sting. A journalist once called him Gordon and he replied: ‘My children call me Sting, my mother calls me Sting, who is this Gordon character?’ In 1977 Sting joined Steward Copeland and Henri Padivani to form the band ‘The Police’ and left in 1985 to start a solo career. Now Sting is one of world’s bestselling artists.

360 trivial fact
Sting started a musical on Broadway; The Last Ship. The story was based on Stings own life. Not absolutely everything the pop singer does is a huge success. The musical only survived for three months on Broadway. Sting himself was on stage for reviving it, but his efforts were in vain.
