1952 -

Today is Jimmy Connors’ birthday. Connors was born in 1952 in the United States and he would become one of world’s most famous tennis players. He has been in the top ten tennis players for sixteen years and was even number one for five consecutive years.

An early start
You could say Connors was destined for greatness from the start. When his mother, Gloria Thompson Connors, was pregnant, she cleared land behind their house to build a tennis court. Gloria was determined to teach her sons the art of tennis. Just like her mother had taught her. Jimmy went on to break countless records and win even more titles.

Bad boy of tennis
Although Connors was known for his powerful two-handed backhand, he was also known for being a maverick and a punk. In the year 1985 Daniel Wood said: ‘When he's up, he struts like a rooster and crows like a bullfinch. When he's down, he grunts and curses like a guttersnipe, wielding his racket switchblade-style toward the crowd.’

Comeback
In the year 1990 Connors’ career seemed to be at an end. He was suffering from a deteriorating wrist. Due to this he fell from rank 14 to 936. However, after surgery he came back and climbed back to rank 49.

360 trivial fact
Connors has more skills than originally meets the eye. In 1994, he competed in the AT&T National Pro-Am golf tournament. In 2014 he even got two holes-in-one in the space of two weeks.
