1978 -

The name 'Cassius Clay' may not make many heads turn, but when people hear 'Sportsman of the 20th century', their interest might be spiked. The man in question is the legendary boxing-champion, who became known as Muhammad Ali.

In the ring
Clay started boxing when he was 12 years old and it quickly became obvious that the boy was very talented. In 1960, at an age of 18, the young Clay won a golden medal at the Olympics in Rome. This was his great breakthrough.
Although best known for his amazing boxing performances, Ali did not only contribute to the sports world, but also inspired many people with his passionate personality.

Into the wild
Ali kept on getting better and better and got himself an immortal status when he won the fight, against all odds, from reigning champion Sonny Liston. Ali won the heavyweight boxing title. Muhammad was also known for his typical statements. He once said his opponent Liston smelled like a bear. ''After I beat him I'm going to donate him to the zoo.''
In total, Ali won the world heavyweight boxing title three times and quit boxing today in 1978. He suffered from Parkinson's disease and died in 2016. Muhammad Ali still is an almost unprecedented individual in the sports world and beyond.

360 trivial fact
During a 3-year ban from boxing, Ali developed himself outside the ring and played in a Broadway musical. According to the public, he walked the stage with grace.
