2004 -

How would you like to get a car? A brand new one. Wouldn’t it be wonderful? So thought the audience of the TV talk show Oprah Winfrey. She had an audience of 276 people on September 13, 2004 and she gave away some cars. At first 11 cars. However, finally she gave away 276 Pontiac G-6’s. Everyone in her studio got a brand new car, worth $28.500.

Jumping and screaming
It turned out as one of the greatest stunts in the history of television. And it’s still an hysterical show to watch. Oprah had her producers find a complete audience of people who desperately needed a car. First off she gave away a couple of cars to some lucky ones. At the end of the show she gave everyone a gift box that they ‘mustn’t open yet’. The person with the supposedly last car key would get the last car. You can imagine already, everybody had a key in their box. As the audience was crying, shouting and yelling, Oprah jumped up and down screaming ‘You get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets a car!’ It is still a much quoted television quote.

360 trivial fact
After the first applause, Oprah’s gift was seriously criticized. Pontiac had donated the new cars and payed sales taxes. But the new owner still had to pay federal and state income taxes; adding up to $6000,- for most of them.
