2006 -

October 4, 2006 was the day lots of politicians and business leaders would like to remove from the history books. It was the day WikiLeaks was launched. The website was initiated in Iceland by the company Sunshine Press. Australian Internet activist Julian Assange is generally described as the founder of the whistleblowing organisation.

Hacking the Pentagon
Assange was born in 1971 in Townsville. His parent had a travelling theatre, so young Julian went to primary school in 37 different places. He studied at six universities in Australia. Assange started hacking under the name Mendax in a group called the International Subversives. At this time he hacked lots of important global organisations like the Pentagon and NASA. He claims it was to reveal security leaks, but he was convicted for hacking nevertheless.

A terrorist and a saint
After his conviction he began working as computer programmer. Julian Assange became Chief-editor of WikiLeaks, which now provides in more than 10 million documents. He himself describes it as ‘a giant library of the world’s most persecuted documents.’ He is named a terrorist and a saint for it. Some politicians even called for his assassination. He is on the run since he published a series of leaks, including the ‘Collateral Murder video’ and the Afghanistan and Iraq war logs, in 2010.

360 trivial facts
Eventually Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. According to British media it costs more than $1500,- per day to keep him safe.
